Life in the Halls 

For many of our Wharenoho | Accommodation kainoho | residents, living in the halls is a way of whakawhanaungatanga | building community with other ngā tauira | students while staying close to campus. Over the course of a year many kainoho build a unique whānau with their neighbours and create long-lasting bonds which will support them throughout their time at University and beyond.

Life in the halls brings a sense of security and support to achieve academic success. But it also focuses on the importance of community through unique events held at each residence. From the PASS Mentor programme to Inter-Residential Tournaments, kainoho and kaimahi| staff in each hall found their own unique way to connect with each other.

Others held culturally specific events to celebrate Aotearoa’s thriving communities:

University Hall Towers got creative for Te Wiki o te Reo Māōri

Te Tirohanga o te Tōangaroa kaihono attended Samoan Cultural Night filled with traditional performances

Hall wide events were held for kainoho to show off their skills and style:

University Hall Towers kainoho lip-synced for their lives in the Drag Race event

O’Rorke worked with NZAF to pack condoms for communities facing the risk of HIV.

Te Tirohanga o te Tōangaroa held a can drive and collected over 200 cans donated to Auckland City Mission

Grafton Hall & Student Flats attended their Renaissance themed Ball

Waipārūrū Hall held a Hunger Games themed End of Semester celebration

As Tāmaki Makaurau | Auckland soon learned, a radical shift in community building and engagement was needed as we entered another prolonged Covid-19 lockdown. Each hall quickly adapted to keep each other safe while still maintain the sense of collegiality. They held TikTok challenges, studied for exams over Zoom, and virtually met to stay connected.

University Hall Towers kainoho were keen to show off their TikTok skills and battle the lockdown blues!

The year ended in celebration of kaihono skills and accomplishment with the 2021 Talent Quest, Residential Excellence Awards, and Inter-Residential Championship.

The Talent Quest featured Flippin’ Cool acts including singing, dancing, and headstands. Take a look at the 2021 winners. You can see the full performances here

Carlaw Park Student Village kainoho got together and won second place for their submission
