Interfaculty Sports Championship

Each year, Sport and Recreation run the Interfaculty Sports Championship, allowing students to represent their faculty across various sports. This year, faculties competed against each other across nine different sports tournaments.

Although several sports tournaments were affected by lockdown, there was the opportunity to add online tournaments to the mix!

The first-ever Esports tournament was launched in August using the game League of Legends. Students on-shore and off-shore participated across five teams and seven faculties, battling it out for the top spot.

“Despite being 2,000 kilometres away from the Auckland campus, Esports allowed me to collaborate and interact with other students within my cohort.” – Fabian, University of Auckland student.

The Facebook group ‘UoA Sports Challenge Accepted’ was also brought back due to it’s success in 2020. Once a challenge was posted, students had one week to accept the challenge and upload a video of themselves completing it with their faculty hashtag. After the week was up, students could vote for their favourite video or their faculty. First, second and third place were awarded points, as well as all faculties who entered the challenge and the most creative entry. Over 2,600 students were part of the Facebook group this year.

After a year of sport in person and online, the Engineering Eagles finished at the top of the podium taking home the Sir Colin Maiden Shield, along with the title of Interfaculty Sports Champions for 2021.

New Interfaculty Sports merch

In May, the new Interfaculty sports merch launched at the Campus Store!

Nine bright and patriotic t-shirts represent the faculty teams who go head-to-head each semester in the Interfaculty Sports Championship. The logos were recently redesigned to further cement each team’s identity and build a sense of pride among staff and students.

These shirts launched just in time for one of the major Interfaculty tournaments of the year, the Basketball and Futsal finals night.
